Although it gets mixed up with all sorts of other terms, like responsible travel, sustainable travel, eco-tourism, and ethical tourism, to name a few, conscious tourism is all about making sure that travellers practice sustainability while they are on an adventure.

Long before we were all put in a lockdown and prevented from travelling to far-flung destinations, tourism was a mass produced and industrialised industry that was almost consumed to the point of overconsumption. Although this did without a doubt have numerous great benefits, in that more people could see the world than ever before and tourism contributed greatly to economies, like everything in life, there are some downsides involved.

Enter conscious tourism. It is not a new idea, rather it is one that has been among the travel terms used for years and now it is becoming more popular than ever before.

Conscious tourism is the answer to some of the problems that have become associated with mass tourism. The concept is based on the idea that the principles surrounding economic and social justice, are kept in mind, and that travellers are dedicated to making sure that the destination they are visiting and the cultures they are submerging themselves in, are not negatively affected.

With a firm dedication to sustainability, something that is achieved by making sure that the way tourism is approached is responsible, travellers can easily achieve the ultimate goal of conscious tourism.

With this sort of travel, guests are encouraged to support the locals by only staying in local hotels and lodges, for a start, instead of going for those facilities owned by overseas companies. By supporting local, you are indirectly supporting the local economy and the local families.

Overtime, conscious tourism has become a practice in mindfulness, ensuring that travellers enjoy a meaningful holiday and only take those trips that they really want to go on.

What you can do to be a conscious traveller?

When you are able to climb aboard a plane and travel once more, you should use this time to make sure that the future holidays you enjoy are planned in a conscious way.

There are 3 easy ways you can do this:

  1. Stay local

There are so many beautiful places to stay, like Kambaku, which are owned, run and maintained by those local to the community. By staying in a lodge like ours, you are directly assisting the local community by contributing financially to their survival. So the first thing you can do when consciously travelling, is to make sure that you stay in local lodges.

  1. Eat local cuisine

Supporting local restaurants and trying out local dishes not only helps to stimulate the local economy but you can improve your holiday experience by being able to explore the cultures you encounter.

  1. Buy local items

Everyone likes to take a souvenir home and South Africa has some of the most exquisite, local, handmade gifts. Beaded items, stone carvings, and other trinkets are all popular gifts that you can buy and in doing so, support the community.

When you next plan a holiday, and especially if you are heading to South Africa, a stay at our luxury Kruger Park lodge is a fantastic idea if you are committed to conscious tourism.
