Description

The Kudu Lily is a beautiful Succulent shrub that has a swollen stem that has branches that trail and travel along the ground. The branches that trail is covered in tiny spines to protect itself from herbivores and also acts to save water when things get a bit dire and water is very scarce. The flower of the Kudu Lily is a white, five leaf flower that blooms during the autumn where the beauty of the flower can be experienced.

Habitat

The Kudu Lily can be found in the Lebombo Mountains and various areas in KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga and even lives in Swaziland and Zimbabwe.

Description

The Devil’s Thorn is a relative of the Tomato and Eggplant. The leaves are semi thick and have a fiber like texture. There are sharp, blood red thorns that stick out from the veins of the leaves which gives the Devil Thorn its name. The actual flower of the Devil thorn is a mauve-pink colour and trumpet-shaped. The fruit of this plant is semi poisonous.

Habitat

The Devil Thorn is actually a very common plant that can be found all throughout South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi and Mozambique.

Description

The Mountain Aloe is a very iconic plant in South Africa. The Mountain aloe is a tall plant with a  tree like stem. The leaves of this plant is very thick and blue-green in colour and is armed with tiny sharp, hooked thorns on the ridges. When a leaf of the Aloe is broken, a yellowish, slimy sap can be found inside. Aloe sap has been used for treating stomach illnesses for centuries and is also used for treating sun burn as the sap contains healing properties. The flowers of the Aloe grow on tube-like stems that protrude from the center of the aloe. The flowers are orange and are cone-shaped in appearance. These Orange flowers will bloom from June to August. This plant has basically no predators since it is so difficult for any herbivore to eat it because of the thick leaves, thorns and the very bitter sap.

Habitat

The Mountain Aloe is found in the provinces of Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North-West, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Gauteng and in KwaZulu-Natal. They can be found on mountains and hills as well as some flat grassy areas.
